Caveats on XSA

This page contains a list of known issues in the current version of the XMM-Newton Science Archive (XSA). This list is continuously updated. The XSA users are therefore invited to check it before reporting any problems to the XMM-Newton HelpDesk.
  • The archive PPS products containing RGS response matrices corresponding to wide field spectrum extraction are invalid for PPS versions older than 07000001_2009030.144400 of March 2009. Their nomenclature is P<obsid>R[1][2]S<expid>WREMAT<ords>.FIT. Users who want to use wide field spectra processed before that date have to re-process the data.

  • The Interactive Image Analysis pop-up window (SPDT) does not open properly for certain RGS spectra, which blow up the virtual machine of the browser. This is a problem of the small memory allocated for the XSA applet.
A Webstartable version of the XSA has been provided, where the memory for the Java Virtual Machine can be set without problem. The browser plugin memory, instead, can not be changed from the application. People using the applet should increase the browser memory handling tuning jvm on their machine. For example, to change JVM settings in Windows:
To change the amount of memory for JVM on a Windows operating system:

       a. Open the Control Panel (Click Start->Settings->Control Panel ).
       b. Double-click on the IBM Java Plug-in or Java Plug-in icon.
       c. On the Java Plug-in Control Panel dialog box, click the Advanced tab.
       d. In the Java Runtime Parameters field, type -Xmsnm, where n is the memory
size. For example, to specify 20MB of memory, type -Xms20m.
       e. Click Apply.
       f. Close the Java Plug-in Control Panel dialog box.

  • If you are using the Netscape 4.x family of browsers you may experience memory problems when the number of sources matching your query is very large (more than 15000). As a possible workaround, we suggest you to download and install a Java plug-in for your browser. Information on this subject is available at the Java plug-in web site. Alternatively, you may consider downloading the data through one of the options listed in our Access Pages.
