The first interface to the XMM-Newton Science Archive (XSA) became publicly available in April 2002. The XMM-Newton Science Archive content is regularly updated with all the generated ODFs and PPS products.
Public data (calibration and Performance Verification phase data as well as open time data for which the proprietary period has expired) can be retrieved through the XSA user interface. PIs of XMM-Newton observations can retrieve their own proprietary data, through a password-protected account. As of XSA v2.5 (April 2004), it is possible as well to run SAS reduction meta-tasks, or extract spectra and/or light curves from a cursor-defined position in the field-of-view of an EPIC observation through the XMM-Newton Science Archive user interface. An XSA Guided Tour and a set of XSA threads guide the users through the main XMM-Newton Science Archive functionalities.
