The mirror production site has extensive clean room facilities for the production of shells, assembly and metrology. This photo shows the storage area of the mandrels (the cylindrical containers on the right each contain one of 58 mandrels). To the left is a row of nickel electroform baths into which the gold-coated polished mandrels are placed one at a time to produce a thin shell.
