XMM-Newton Long Term Plan

Covered period: Revs 2270-2452 [2012-05-01 to 2013-04-30]

XMM-Newton scheduling is mainly driven by the need to maximise the scientific content of the timeline, while minimising overhead time (e.g.: slew duration). External constraints (coordination with other observatories, fixed-time observations etc.) are only taken into account if explicitly foreseen in the scientific justification of the proposal as approved by the Time Allocation Committee. Otherwise, they may be fulfilled on a "best effort" basis.

The current XMM-Newton Long Term Plan covers the time interval until the end of AO-11, currently foreseen at the end of April 2013. It is split in units of four revolutions (i.e. 8 days) and is built upon the most "critical target(s)" in each orbit. The criticality of a target is inversely proportional to the length of its visibility window. External or user defined constraints also contribute to the target criticality. Most of the observations included in the plan therefore fall within one of the following classes:
  • highly constrained targets, with short visibility window
  • observations coordinated with other observatories
  • fixed-time observations

Only about 50% of the granted A+B priority observing time was put into the Long Term Plan. The remaining time will be filled during the process of schedule generation, normally three to four weeks in advance of observation execution. The selection of observations to enter the schedule will be strictly done on the basis of creating an optimal observation sequence, and deviations from the long term plan may be necessary. Once the scheduling of a given revolution is prepared, the content of the timeline can be accessed via the Scheduled Observation Search Page.

Before an observation can be released for scheduling, the XMM-Newton SOC reviews the observing set-up, to check for instrument safety and scientific optimisation. This process is called proposal enhancement. The Principal Investigator (PI) is contacted, if a modification to the original proposal is needed or to request confirmation of the instrumental configuration originally proposed. In principle, no observation can be released for scheduling without prior explicit agreement from the PI.

Caveats

All Principal Investigators (PIs) should be aware that their observation may not be included in the long term plan.

In order to assure flexibility while at the same time following the time allocations given below, the long term plan fills about 50% of the available observing time: Consequently many of the approved observations do not appear in the long term plan and will be allocated in the short term observing plan some 3-4 weeks prior to observation.

Although it is intended to follow the Long Term Plan as closely as possible, some observations without scheduling constraints, mostly the unconstrained routine calibration observations or the unconstrained observations currently planned for the end of this AO, might be scheduled earlier than foreseen. In any case, the XMM-Newton SOC may change the plan at any stage of the scheduling process, should this become necessary. Once the scheduling of a given revolution is prepared, the content of the timeline can be accessed via the Scheduled Observation Search Page.

The Long Term Plan is not being updated during the AO.

The XMM-Newton Long Term Plan for AO-11 is given below.

Contact:

PIs who would like to address specific questions on their XMM-Newton proposal, must send an e-mail to specifying in the Subject: the proposal number. Only the PIs - or a delegate explicitly nominated by the PI - can query/access information on a specific XMM-Newton proposal via the above email address.

For not proposal specific questions, please send a message to the SOC Helpdesk account via the Heldpesk web interface.
