12th XMM-Newton SAS Workshop
Motivation and rationaleThe 12th XMM-Newton Science Analysis System (SAS) Workshop aims at providing XMM-Newton users, having little or no experience of XMM-Newton data analysis, with an introduction to the procedures and techniques to successfully reduce and analyse XMM-Newton data. No specific knowledge of X-ray data analysis is required to attend the workshop, although a general knowledge of XMM-Newton and its scientific payload is desirable. We recommend the workshop participants to refer to the XMM-Newton Users Handbook. Those wishing to familiarise themselves somewhat with the SAS may refer to the SAS Portal, where you can also find the SAS Users Guide. The presentations from the previous workshop are also available here.Workshop structureThe 5-day workshop is organised around half-days of presentations and half-days of practical training (hands-on) sessions. The presentations will cover basic topics related to XMM-Newton data analysis and SAS, such as:
The workshop will follow the general structure highlighted below. The details of the programme will be published at a later stage:
Hands-on sessionsDuring the hands-on training sessions the participants, supported by XMM-Newton scientists, will have the opportunity to accomplish reduction tasks on XMM-Newton public data-sets downloaded from the XMM-Newton Science Archive. Participants may bring their own data as well, if they wish. Linux workstations will be available for all participants during the hands-on sessions. However, it is encouraged that those participants wishing to bring their personal laptops do so. The morning of the first day of the workshop has been allocated to help in setting up the laptops so that they can be used to work with SAS during the hands-on sessions. It is important that general instructions on the minimum installation requirements are followed as given in, Do not hesitate to contact the XMM-Newton HelpDesk specifying in the subject line:Subject: Assistance with laptop SAS installation for 12th XMM-Newton SAS Workshop
RegistrationThe pre-registration period ends on April 30 2012. Pre-registered participants are confirmed via email a place to attend the workshop. All the places available to attend the workshop are currently filled. However, we will keep a waiting list in case any of the pre-registered participants does not confirm the attendance. Interested persons are invited to send an email through the XMM-Newton HelpDesk specifying in the subject line:Subject: Interest in participating in the 12th XMM-Newton SAS Workshopand providing the following information: Name : Organisation : Address : Country : Phone : E-mail : Main Research Field : Need means of transportation between pre-booked accommodation at Madrid and Venue at ESAC ? : YES/NO Bring your own laptop ? : YES/NO Registration f(r)eeNo fee is required to attend the workshop. We regret to inform that no financial support is available for Workshop participants. The number of places is limited to 20 participants, accepted on a first-come, first-served basis.VenueThe Workshop is organized by the XMM-Newton Science Operations Centre (SOC) and will be held at the European Space Astronomy Centre (ESAC) of the European Space Agency (ESA). ESAC is the ESA centre for space science, which means Astronomy as well as Solar System exploration, and the home of the XMM-Newton Science Operations Centre.
Workshop participants can have lunch at the ESAC canteen. The cost of a typical meal is
around 5 Euro.
On the first day of the Workshop, participants will be asked for a photo
identification and be issued a badge to enter the Venue which will be valid
for the whole week. Every day upon arrival, participants will need to enter
the Venue through the guard's entrance house using the badge. Inside the
Venue, the badges need to be displayed at any time, and given back to the
guards at the end of the last day of the Workshop.
TransportPlease be aware that ESAC is not easy to access with public transportation. Refer to the ESAC access web page for more information. For those Workshop participants staying in Madrid, a taxi service will be available free of charge between Hotel Florida Norte (see Accommodation) and ESAC in the morning and in the evening. This service is also available for workshop participants who do not stay at the recommended hotel, however, the taxi service will be only from and to Hotel Florida Norte. As additional help:
For the last day of the Workshop (15th of June), taxis to the airport can be
arranged upon request, at the participant's expense. Just let the organizers
know in advance during the first days of the Workshop. AccommodationFor those participants registered at the SAS workshop, a block of rooms has been reserved at the Hotel Florida Norte.
Participants are certainly free to choose their own accommodation, but shuttle services to ESAC will only be available from and to the recommended hotel (see Transport above).
